GREED- A SHORT STORY

Akash's sister Nehha was missing for 24 hours,

Her apartment was locked and her phone was switched off too.

police were still investigating her whereabouts but they didn't seem to be connected to the case much.

Next day Akash went to Neha's office where she used to work and talked to her colleagues, No one knew where she went even her best friend trishu didn't know about her.

He asked trishu when did she call him last and he said on the last Tuesday and she told him that her debts are increasing day by day and she needed help so Trishu transferred some money into her account to rescue her,

Next day there was a loud bang on Akash's door, His eyes were still sleep deprived when he got up and opened the door, Two cops were standing in front of him and the one with the mustache said in a heavy voice

"We are sorry to inform you Mr.Akash that we have found the dead body of your sister Neha, she was murdered in glory hotel where she had been staying during the night of Tuesday"

Akash's eyes popped out with tears.

The next day Akash went to Neha's apartment, He had a spare key of her apartment in case of emergency so he used it, her room was a mess; all the books and reports of her office were curled upon each other,

he found a phone laying on the cabinet near the television, he picked it up and left a message.

The phone started ringing within 10 seconds,

"YOU WON'T BELIEVE IT BUT POLICE HAVNE'T FOUND WHO KILLED HER HAHAHA"

Akash's blood was rushing in rage

He exclaimed,

"IDIOT IS THIS HOW YOH DO IT? I KNEW YOU WILL DO SOMETHING OR OTHER WHICH COULD CREATE TROUBLE. FOR THE GOODNESS SAKE CAN YOU TELL ME NOW WHY DID YOU LEAVE THIS PHONE HERE? DO YOU REALLY WANT POLICE TO FIND OUT EVERYTHING?

The men replied in a guilty tone

"SSSS... SS..... SORRY, SIR MY BAD I FORGOT TO TAKE THE PHONE BACK... I AM EXTREMELY SORRY SIR"

"OKAY, FROM NOW ON NONE OF US KNOW WHO WE ARE, BYE"

He hung up the phone and took his sister's credit card and went to his apartment and slept with relief.

Innocent Murderer-A Short Story

Innocent Murderer-A Short Story

12 July 2004

There was not the slightest crack in my voice, nor my teeth were chattering anymore, I removed my left hand From my mouth and saw some red drops of blood dripping from my fingers to my palm, From my palm to my elbow, From elbow to ground, The deadliest knife in my right hand with its sharp edges was filled with blood, I remembered the color of that knife was plane gray and now the redness on its edges shows that the knife has done its job well. The man laying in front of me now isn't screaming, I knelt beside him and hoped for him to breathe but a part of me was relieved that he is no more alive than he used to be.

10 July 2004

I said goodbye to Neha and went to the library, I had only 5 days left to submit the review of "The Silent Patient Book By Alex Michaelides" to my editor and I haven't even opened that book yet. I went to the library, Found the book and started reading it, I did not know how fast time past till the librarian came near the table where I was sitting and told me "The library needs to closed now dear...You should head back to home"

I raised my head with shock and confusion and asked her the time,

It was half-past nine and the entire library was empty, I got up, gave a wry smile to the librarian and got out of the library to catch the bus, The bus stop was vacant too I didn't have any choice left rather than booking a cab, but as soon as I checked my phone it was dead, I was cursing myself for being such a fool, I should have started reading the book after reaching home and now my eyes were straining but I must admit the fact that the book was worth my time. I walked for nearly 15 minutes to reach st. Joseph road to catch a taxi, As I was standing on the vacant footpath I felt someone's breath at the back of my neck, I tried to turn back, A bearded man put a handkerchief on my nose and I fell on the floor.

11 July 2004

"How could this happen? what?….she isn't?.."

I heard the man shouting to someone on the phone, His back in front of me.

My head was spinning and my vision was blurry, I saw a deep mark around my wrist like they were tied tight with a strong rope, It nearly took me an eternity to exactly figure out that I was being kidnapped, But why? and who kidnapped me?

"if she isn't that girl then I'd better end her here because she has seen my face….yes …yes I do have a knife and she is now laying on the floor motionless, it's better to do it now….as soon as possible…ok…."

His words felt like some sharp thorns being tied around my neck and someone was pulling them to make me feel worse. He turned back and saw that I am awake

"Sorry innocent girl but you gotta die"

He came near me with a sharp gray knife then he hold my wrist tight,

I stumbled and fell on the floor, He came nearer and I saw a soda can near my feet I kicked it hard and it went flying and hit his face, He lost his grip and the knife fell on the floor I ran rapidly and took hold of the knife and told him to open the door, He started yelling at me loudly,

"You dumb fool, put that knife on the floor....put it down now....."

His screams were so loud, My hands were shaking in fear, my teeth were chattering and I lost control as he came nearer with his red face and rising tempered, I wasn't me for a moment, I stabbed the knife into his stomach and he fell on the floor; lifeless. I ...... I didn't want it to happen .......I .....lost control........there was no one around....... I ran from that place and no one saw me.

2 May 2006

But today I still hear whispers in my ear,

"you are an innocent........murderer girl"

REGRET: A SHORT STORY

REGRET: A SHORT STORY

Its been three years since I have been working as a professional lawyer and there were many ups and downs in my life,
Running from court to court, Getting threat calls from the opposition party, Working with a mental patient who killed people due to their mental illness; trying to prove my clients are innocent, This and that…this and that till I was tired…. I was getting exhausted so I did as my father suggested.

I took a long solo trip to goa and was staying alone in my father’s cottage which he bought a few years back, The first few days went amazing and precious, I had seen sunset and sunshine, heard the chirping of birds, smiled at strangers, visited library not to read law books but fantasy and fictional.

It was 2 past midnight when I was sitting on a wooden rocking chair reading last few pages of a fictional book and the landline phone rang,
I was so indulged in the book that I missed the call,
After a few seconds, my phone rang again, it kept ringing ……till I sighed and picked it up.
“hello…” I asked
“save me…please….. I have been kidnapped….please save….me”
I have heard people begging to be saved in the courtroom, in my office but this time the voice of this girl was Tremulous I could hear the chattering of her teeth, her heavy breath, I was stunned.
“hello….who…who are you?…and who kidnapped you?”
The phone got disconnected, I thought the kidnapper must have caught the girl or she must have felt his footsteps so I didn’t call back,
As far as my profession is concerned you should never call back to the victim cause it will only increase your trouble so,
I waited two hours for the call I knew if the girl is really in trouble she’ll call back.
Around 4 in the morning she called.
“hello….save me …..he will kill…..me “
“hello…..tell me your address….tell me your name so I could find you ……” I was shouting, I was worried about the girl. I told her my phone number and asked her to send me her address where the kidnapper has been keeping her,
She said she'll send me the address and
The phone got disconnected again.

I quickly glanced through the address and was shocked and angry,
How can someone do such prank with me?
I called back to that girl
“How dare you….do you think I am fool here….do you think its funny…calling me and telling me that you are kidnapped and sending me the address of my own cottage….”
“no…..i need your help…I have sent you the right address”
“Stop playing games now…..or else you will end up in jail….”
I cut the call and again glanced through the entire address just to be sure but it was the same; the address of my cottage.

Next day I got up and after my morning breakfast was watching TV,
The headline of the news says:
“POLICE FOUND A DEAD BODY OF A 20-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN ST. PETER COTTAGE: THE GIRL MADE THE LAST CALL TO AN UNIDENTIFIED NUMBER AND TRIED TO SENT SOMEONE HER ADDRESS BUT DUE TO ZERO BALANCE THE MESSAGE REMAINED UNSENT, POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING TO FIND THE KILLER AND IDENTITY OF A PERSON WHOM THE GIRL CALLED LAST TIME”

My hands went numb, I immediately stood up, went to my bedroom and checked my messages again, the last message I got was of my cottage address from a random number,
When I checked the last call I got from the girl on my landline phone I started shaking,
Because the number from which I got the address of my cottage and the number from which the girl called me was different,
It wasn’t a prank.

I went to the police and told them everything.
As a lawyer, I always knew how to get out of trouble even though the fault is of my own,
But this time my heart was filled with guilt and shame, I thought that I am worthy to be punished but the cases didn’t make a fuss for too long
They said it was a misunderstanding and my father took care of everything as I was unable to do on my own
It would have been better if it was just a prank
The girl would be saved.

My favourite Urdu poetry and its translation in English.

My favorite "Urdu poetry" and its translation in English

"Asiya, When will you start teaching me URDU?"

I was having a conversation with my new friend in college and I told her that I can read and write Urdu, And my friend started insisting me to teach her Urdu too.

I promised her that I will, And then I completely forgot about it.

And now during the worst crises of COVID-19 pandemic where we all are trapped in our house due to lockdown, I started sending Urdu poetry to my friend with translation so she could understand it better. Although I am not a big fan of Urdu poetry, A few days back I came across one Urdu poetry that was stuck in my mind and touched my heart deeply, This poetry was written in simple words and yet with deep profound meaning. It taught me the most valuable lessons in life. And I am glad to share it with you. So guys here's the short poetry.

''Umar bhar 'Ghalib' yahi Bhool karta Raha,
Dhool Chehre pe Thi, aur aina saaf karta raha''

Translation: ''The whole life Ghalib made this mistake, the dust was on his face and he was cleaning the mirror''

The poetry was written by Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan (Urdu: مِرزا اسَدُاللہ بیگ خان), He was a prominent Urdu and Persian poet during the last years of the Mughal Empire. He used his pen-names of Ghalib (Urdu: غالِب, ġhālib means "dominant") and Asad (Urdu: اسَد, Asad means "lion").

The meaning of poetry highlights one of the worst agonies of life called "REGRET".Most of us have been through some situation in our life where we were so indulged in doing the wrong or not doing anything that we often let go of the important time we could have utilized for our betterment which gives rise to our gloomy regrets, I don't believe in being a perfectionist so mistakes are and have always been a part of my life, Earlier I used to be someone who wouldn't do something she was really passionate about just because she was afraid to fail, afraid to make mistakes, afraid to handle criticism and I kept myself away from completing my most desires for my happiness and as the time passes my life kept giving me bundles of regrets to make my days worst. The only moment of ecstasy I felt was when I realized that life was pulling me down to teach a lesson, to make me realized that instead of blaming the situation or people around me I should learn to accept my all flaws that I have made mistakes, that I stepped back during the time I really needed to march ahead, that it's not too late now, that I can still go ahead and this poetry is one of the best epitome of "A life filled with regrets and mistakes because the poet never realized that all the flaws were buried within when what he actually doing was trying to change things from outside". The poetry taught me that the only significant change is a change that starts from within. The reason why I like this poetry so much is because of the way the poet had observed life and choose to make us face our own mistakes and to make us realized that sometimes regrets are all about our unawareness from our own mistakes.

"Good words are worth much, and cost little."
—George Herbert

Sir "Ghalib" words are the best example of how much worth good words can have and with a little or no cost.
